Just thought of something. Wouldn't CVT diesels be efficient as hell? As an American, our petrol CVTs get great gas mileage, approaching even diesel (conventional auto) territory.
Upon further research, seems like the overseas Subaru Outback and Forester came with this combo. Is it really that much more efficient? Are there any other cars that came with this combo? Could it be the future?
On second thought, just found this

Seems the manual is MORE efficient than the CVT in the Outback diesel... go figure.

For some reason, I seem to remember that CVTs have issues with high torque. Strangles the longevity. I dunno, I'm not an engineer.

i'd go with the manual anyway.

The torque curve on a diesel is really different, so the CVT might not have the same effect. Keeping a diesel in it's optimal power band is difficult, I should know I'm shifting constantly in mine.

what BEB said, CVTs have issues handling lots of torque.
what makes diesel so great? lots of torque.

Just had a look and we get several CVT diesels in the UK. The CVT seems to make economy worse. For example on a 1.6 diesel Qashqai the CVT gets 61.4 mpg and the manual gets 64.2mpg.
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

This exactly. CVTs can't take that much torque compared to planetary autos.

It's interesting that Subaru seemingly hasn't changed the EE20 one bit since they launched it in what, 2008?

Which must explain why Subaru isn't having as many problems with theirs. haha

That is one reason I'm afraid of getting a TDI, I'm used to a powerband from 3000-6000 rpm, in my Honda, not 2000-3500.

It won't be that bad in a bigger diesel than mine (mine's only a 1.3 with 70hp) but it will probably take some time for you to adjust. It's kind of nice having torque low down for daily driving.
